The Beginnings
Chapters opened on 29 November and is an English-language bookshop and cultural space in the heart of Moabit, located between Berlin’s two historical centres, the old West around Charlottenburg and the old East around Mitte.
Moabit, our neighbourhood, is literally an island in the Spree. It is grounded and unhurried, a place that gives the bookshop space to grow roots. With its bridges, cultures and everyday beauty, it is exactly why we chose it. Chapters is a bookshop built for discovery, a calm and generous destination in the middle of the city.
Founded by Sharmaine Lovegrove, a former publisher and current literary agent, Chapters is shaped by decades of discovering new voices and creating spaces where stories can thrive. The curation reflects editorial rigour, cultural curiosity and a belief in literature as a connector. It is a place where readers feel held, stimulated and invited to stay awhile.
Our shelves are organised by themes that mirror how people actually read. The emotional, the intellectual, the imaginative and the political sit side by side. From Romantic & Ruinous to Dreams & Disruption, from Memory & Myth to Power & Resistance, we blend contemporary work with foundational titles so readers can understand not only what is trending, but where it came from.
We love being booksellers and sharing recommendations, drawing from our shelves and the wider literary world to match every reader with the right book.
Chapters is also a community space. We offer creative writing courses and run book clubs shaped by our themes. Our Chill with Chapters hour invites readers of all ages into quiet companionship, reading side by side in a shared moment of calm. We host intimate conversations and events with local and international authors, creating space for meaningful dialogue within the neighbourhood. We also work with local schools and KiTas to introduce young readers to stories and imagination, welcoming them into a space that encourages curiosity from an early age.
